The short answer

Yes, if the package supports deviating reporting periods. Test the dates, comparatives and export before you enter an extended financial year.

Legal basis: art. 2:10a and 2:363 DCC

Which dates belong to the extended financial year?

An extended financial year is a concrete software test, not a setting you can tick without checking. The programme must carry the actual start and end dates through to all parts. Check the figures as well as the text and digital output. A report with eighteen months of turnover must not wrongly state twelve months.

Take the period from the articles of association and the incorporation documents. According to the Dutch Tax Administration (Belastingdienst), the financial year for corporate income tax must match the financial year in the articles; a first financial year can be longer or shorter. Art. 2:10a DCC gives the civil-law starting point for the financial year. The software therefore does not determine which period is legally valid. If your records already contain two calendar years, it must be clear how these together form one reporting period. Check that the opening balance is not counted twice and that an interim result entry does not distort the total profit.

How does software handle time-dependent items?

Test items that depend on time. Depreciation runs from the date of first use under the applicable accounting policy and does not become correct simply by multiplying an annual total by one and a half. Interest may have different rates or balances during the period. Prepaid costs may run past the first calendar-year boundary. Have the programme work out one chosen item and compare it with your own calculation. Also check whether a management overview with twelve-month averages is distinguished from the formal annual accounts over the longer period. Otherwise figures with different meanings are placed side by side.

Comparative information needs extra attention. A first set of annual accounts has no earlier annual accounts of the same new BV that can simply be copied. In a following year, a period of twelve months can stand next to a first period of eighteen months. Art. 2:363 DCC is then relevant for comparability and presentation. State the different periods clearly and do not simply present a difference in turnover as growth or decline. An optional management calculation per month can help, but must remain recognisable as supplementary analysis. It does not replace the actual reporting periods in the annual accounts.

Which trial output do you ask for?

Before purchase, ask for a trial export with exactly your dates. Look at the start and end contexts, the balance sheet date shown and the chosen taxonomy. Have the supplier confirm which extended periods the software actually supports and which work is needed by hand. A verbal 'that is possible' is less useful than a worked example report. Keep the tax return separate in your planning: support for an extended year in reporting software does not mean that a return module automatically takes over the same settings. Keep the check calculations with the file, so that the deviating period is still understandable next year.
