The short answer

The support articles of Twinfield Boekhouden (Wolters Kluwer) describe no annual accounts module of their own, but two exports under Financial professionals > Year-end closing: Annual accounts (for Caseware, Sage APEX, Unit4 Audition or as Comparative Annual Overview) and Audit files (up to XML version 3.2). For the whole financial year, enter periods 0 to 55.

What Twinfield itself offers for the annual accounts

Twinfield Boekhouden is the accounting package; the annual accounts are produced in software that connects to it. The support article ‘Annual accounts and audit files’ describes an export with four destinations: Caseware, Sage APEX, Unit4 Audition and Comparative Annual Overview. The first three are packages from other suppliers.

  1. Go to Financial professionals > Year-end closing > Annual accounts.
  2. Enter the year and choose periods 0 to 55 to include all entries of the year.
  3. Choose the status: Draft, Final or Both.
  4. With multiple currencies, choose the base currency or the reporting currency.
  5. Under Export to, select the destination and click Next.

The file then appears in file management, in the folder Annual accounts export.

Exporting an audit file from Twinfield

  1. Go to Financial professionals > Year-end closing > Audit files and choose New.
  2. Enter the year and, under Period, 0 to 55.
  3. Choose the reporting structure; it determines the grouping of the balance sheet and profit and loss account.
  4. Choose the version: classic 1.0, XML 2.0, XML 3.1 or XML 3.2.
  5. Review the options, such as Export draft entries; they are on by default.
  6. Choose what happens after creation: Do not pack (XAF), Pack (PBL.XFC), Pack and encrypt (XFC) or Pack (ZIP).
  7. Click Generate and download the file with the arrow in the overview.

Twinfield creates one audit file per administration and per financial year. The file contains a header with control totals, the ledger accounts, all transactions per journal and the master data of accounts receivable and payable. You cannot delete an audit file once created in Twinfield; if there is an error, create a new one with different criteria.

We did not consult an article in the support portal on the menu path to the trial balance as a report. If you are looking for an Excel file instead of an audit file, search the portal under Reports, and check the result against the trial balance guide.

RGS in Twinfield: the reporting structure

Twinfield records the classification of accounts in reporting structures, found under Reports > Reporting structures. The support article on this mentions setting up an RGS reporting structure as an example. You do not link an account from the ledger account itself: that is only possible via the Reporting structures function. On the Groups tab of an account you do see which structure it belongs to.

For firms with template administrations there is a pitfall that Twinfield reports in capitals. If you fully synchronise a structure from a template, accounts that were added in the client administration and are not in the template are unlinked again. Twinfield's advice: synchronise fully once and afterwards only changes. Accounts without a link require manual mapping when preparing the annual accounts.

Checks before exporting from Twinfield

  • Right administration. If you work in a firm environment, check the name and code of the administration; every file applies to one administration.
  • Draft entries. The option is on by default. If you want only final entries, switch it off, or make the entries final first.
  • Year-end closing. Since 2026 Twinfield has three choices: Draft (Update), Draft (New year) and Final. With Update the opening balances are recalculated after new or changed entries.
  • Closing definitively. If deferral transactions are open, Twinfield shows a message that you must expressly agree to.

Worked example: periods 1 to 12 is not the whole year

A BV shows a profit of € 88.400 over periods 1 to 12. The depreciation of € 21.000 was posted in a later period of the same financial year, as a correction after December was closed. If you limit the export to 1 to 12, you get € 88.400; over periods 0 to 55 it is € 67.400. The file with the too-high profit balances just fine, because the counter-entry on the fixed assets is missing too. That is why Twinfield prescribes 0 to 55 for the whole financial year.

From Twinfield export to annual accounts

The export is half of the work. The annual accounts also require the prior-year figures art. 2:363(5) DCC, notes and an adopted version that is filed within eight days art. 2:394(1) DCC.

Twinfield and Jaarrekening.io

Jaarrekening.io reads XAF audit files in versions 3.1 and 3.2, exactly the two newest versions Twinfield offers. When creating, choose Do not pack (XAF): the app expects an .xaf or .xml file, not an XFC archive. After reading it in, the app checks the period against the financial year and the balance between debit and credit. It looks for RGS codes in the fields for the lead code and the lead reference; if they are not there, you get an AI proposal. A trial balance in Excel or CSV is also possible. A direct link with Twinfield is in preparation and not yet released, see linking to your accounting package.

When your firm is the better route

If a firm keeps your administration in Twinfield and also compiles the accounts, the annual accounts export to that firm's package is the shortest way. You then do not have to export anything yourself. Preparing them yourself fits if you keep the books in your own hands, or if you want to prepare the annual accounts of a holding while the firm does the operating company. If you also want to keep that holding's books yourself, you can do so in the bookkeeping of Jaarrekening.io.

Frequently asked questions

Which periods do I choose for a Twinfield audit file?

For the whole financial year, periods 0 to 55. That is what Twinfield's support article says, for both the audit file and the annual accounts export. With 1 to 12 you miss what was posted before and after.

Can I delete a wrong audit file in Twinfield?

No. According to Twinfield it is not possible to delete an audit file once created. You create a new one with different criteria. Audit files appear in their own overview and not in file management.

Does the RGS code come along in the Twinfield audit file?

Twinfield writes that the audit file contains the ledger accounts, ‘possibly with lead code’. Whether a code is present depends on the reporting structure you choose when creating it and on the link of your accounts to it. Open the file to check.

Must the financial year be definitively closed before I export?

The export does not require that: you choose the status Draft, Final or Both yourself. It is sensible, though, to export after the last correction and to update the provisional year-end closing, so that the opening balance of the new year is correct.
