As a Speedbooks alternative, Jaarrekening.io fits if you mainly want to prepare the annual accounts themselves and pay per financial year. If you want reports all year and SBR filing from one package, Speedbooks fits better.

What is Speedbooks?

Speedbooks describes itself as ‘cloud-based reporting software that works on top of your existing bookkeeping package’ and adds: ‘Speedbooks is not a bookkeeping package’ (source: speedbooks.nl, SME rates). According to the SBR page it connects with ‘180+ bookkeeping packages’ (source: speedbooks.nl, SBR).

For filing, Speedbooks converts the figures to the SBR format; ‘the secure direct link then automatically files all relevant documents with the KVK - after you have been able to carry out a quick check’ (source: speedbooks.nl, SBR).

For entrepreneurs there are three packages: Starter € 49, Expert € 59 and Ultimate € 69 a month, with a 1-year subscription. All packages include ‘Prepare and export annual accounts (Excel template)’; SBR filing with the KVK is an optional add-on (source: speedbooks.nl, SME rates). For firms Speedbooks names packages from € 49 a month, with SBR as an option (source: speedbooks.nl, accountant rates). We found no mention of VAT with these amounts.

Who Speedbooks is meant for

Speedbooks targets ‘SME entrepreneurs who want to make management reports and annual accounts themselves’, controllers who want real-time insight and companies that must file the annual accounts with the KVK (source: speedbooks.nl, SME rates). There is also a firm version for accountants and bookkeeping firms (source: speedbooks.nl, accountant rates).

The difference with a pure annual accounts tool is the ongoing use. You look at the dashboard and the periodic reports all year, and the annual accounts are the final piece.

How Jaarrekening.io works differently from Speedbooks

The annual accounts route of Jaarrekening.io revolves around the year-end close: import a trial balance or XAF audit file, link accounts to the statutory line items and prepare the annual accounts: balance sheet, profit and loss account and notes. Where required, a separate management report is added. You can export as pdf, Word and Excel file and as a publication version.

Notes and management report appear as an editable draft that the AI writes from your figures. Speedbooks names a ‘Speedbooks AI assistant’ among the analysis features (source: speedbooks.nl, SME rates); what that assistant does for the notes is not on the rates page.

On filing the difference is large. Speedbooks offers an SBR link that submits the documents to the KVK after your check (source: speedbooks.nl, SBR). With Jaarrekening.io you get a publication version, not a filing message. Jaarrekening.io sends nothing to the KVK. For micro and small you can enter the data yourself in the KVK portal Zelf Deponeren. The XBRL file of a large entity cannot go through that portal: an intermediary, usually the accountant, submits it with SBR software. Jaarrekening.io produces an XBRL validation candidate for every size class, for financial years starting in 2023 through 2026. Have it validated externally before filing.
