Best software for Dutch annual accounts in 2026: overview by category
There is no single best annual accounts software. The right choice depends on who does the work, the size class and whether an accountant must audit.
Updated: October 2026. The best software for Dutch annual accounts depends on three questions. Do you prepare the annual accounts yourself, or does your firm? Which size class does the entity fall into? And is an audit by an accountant mandatory? For a micro or small BV with a simple balance sheet, the free KVK portal is already an option (source: kvk.nl, Zelf Deponeren). Firms usually work with specialised year-end software.
This guide puts the options side by side as the vendors describe them on their own websites in October 2026. We make annual accounts software ourselves. That is why we give no ranking and no quality judgement, but describe per category who it is meant for and what to watch for.
Preparing annual accounts consists of two steps. First you prepare the annual accounts: balance sheet, profit and loss account and notes (art. 2:361(1) DCC). Where required, you also prepare a management report. Then you file the publication documents with the KVK. Software can do one, the other or both. That difference largely determines which category fits you.
How this comparison was made
For each vendor we looked at four things: the target group, what the software does for preparing and filing, which size classes are named and whether a price is published. We used only public information from the vendors themselves and official sources from the KVK and SBR, consulted on 5 October 2026.
We have not tested the packages and give no scores. If a fact is not on the vendor's website, we say so. Prices are given as the vendor states them, with the VAT statement if there is one. The order within a category says nothing about quality.
This page is on the website of Jaarrekening.io. Where our own product fits, and above all where it does not, you can read in a separate section.

Year-end software for accounting firms
With this software a firm compiles annual accounts for many clients at once, reviews them and files them. Typical are a compilation file, work programmes, review steps and submission via SBR from the package.
The price is usually a monthly amount per firm, or is not published. For an entrepreneur with one BV this is rarely the logical choice. You do come into contact with it via your accountant.
Suitable for
Accounting and bookkeeping firms with compilation engagements, also for medium-sized entities and groups.
Note
Ask per package for which size classes you can file directly. Some packages do that only for micro and small, and for submission from software your own PKIoverheid certificate is needed (source: exact.com, features and prices).
Examples from this category
- Caseware SAMENSTEL+: ‘Prepare complete annual accounts for all legal forms and sizes’, with SBR annual accounts ‘ready for filing’. Price not published (source: caseware.com, SAMENSTEL+).
- Nmbrs Compilation: Visionplanner became part of Nmbrs on 1 September 2026 (source: nmbrs.com, press release). The report generator prepares the annual accounts ‘from micro to large’ (source: nmbrs.com, accountants). Rates on request (source: nmbrs.com, firm rates).
- Exact Online Jaarrekening: for ‘natural persons, micro and small entities’, with KVK filing in Essentials for € 99 a month, excl. VAT (source: exact.com, product).
- Nextens Jaarrekening: ‘We currently support micro and small entities’ (source: nextens.nl, switching). Basis from € 72 a month, excl. VAT (source: nextens.nl, product).
- SnelStart Accountant Pro: annual accounts for micro and small and filing for those classes (source: snelstart.nl, annual accounts), € 198,50 a month, excl. VAT (source: snelstart.nl, rates).
- Silverfin, part of Visma: according to its own website the Annual accounts module automates ‘the preparation and filing of the annual accounts’ (source: silverfin.com, archived version).
The order of these examples says nothing about quality or suitability.
Bookkeeping packages with an annual accounts function
Many entrepreneurs expect their bookkeeping package to prepare the annual accounts. That differs greatly per package. Some put the balance sheet and profit and loss account in the KVK layout, others deliver only reports that you merge yourself.
Moneybird writes itself: ‘Moneybird does not compile full annual accounts’ (source: moneybird.nl, help centre). Jortt puts the balance sheet and profit and loss account in the KVK layout; after that you log in to the KVK yourself and file (source: jortt.nl). With e-Boekhouden.nl you run the balance sheet and profit and loss account and merge them yourself (source: e-boekhouden.nl).
If you work with separate annual accounts software, the figures come from the package via an export or a link. What that involves is in linking annual accounts software to your bookkeeping package.
Suitable for
Micro and small BVs with a simple administration, whose figures are already in the package.
Note
See whether the package also produces the notes and which threshold it uses for the size class. The law works with two of the three criteria on two consecutive balance sheet dates (art. 2:395a to 2:397 DCC), not with turnover alone.
The KVK portal Zelf Deponeren
The KVK has its own portal ‘in which micro and small business classes can prepare their annual accounts and file them with KVK’ (source: kvk.nl, Zelf Deponeren). You fill in the figures yourself; the annual accounts then become available in XBRL. Medium-sized and large entities can in the portal only upload annual accounts that have already been adopted, and for that only log in with e-mail address and password, with an authorisation (source: kvk.nl, Zelf Deponeren).
Filing is free (source: kvk.nl, frequently asked questions). For micro and small you log in with e-mail address and password plus an authorisation, with eHerkenning from level EH2, or with an access code of the entity. For eHerkenning you often do pay the provider (source: kvk.nl, Zelf Deponeren). How that works step by step is in filing annual accounts with the KVK, step by step.
Suitable for
A micro or small entity with a simple balance sheet, which can take the figures from the bookkeeping itself.
Note
The portal is meant for the single-entity annual accounts (source: kvk.nl, micro and small). It is a fill-in and submission route: responsibility for the content always lies with the entity itself (source: SBR guide 2025).
Reporting software that connects to your bookkeeping
An in-between form is software that imports the figures from your bookkeeping package and makes reports and annual accounts from them, without being a bookkeeping package itself. Speedbooks, for example, says: ‘Speedbooks is not a bookkeeping package’, and targets SME entrepreneurs, controllers and firms (source: speedbooks.nl, SME rates).
Such software is mainly interesting if you also want monthly reports and a dashboard. The annual accounts are then one of the functions.
Suitable for
Entrepreneurs and controllers who want management reports all year in addition to the annual accounts.
Note
See whether filing via SBR is included or a separate module. With Speedbooks, SBR filing with the KVK is an optional add-on (source: speedbooks.nl, SME rates).
Self-service tools and AI software for entrepreneurs
Newer are web tools with which a director prepares the annual accounts themselves, without a firm package. They differ greatly in depth: from fill-in screens to software that writes notes and management report as a draft.
Examples are Jaarklaar, which charges per set of annual accounts on export (‘Only pay when you export’, € 19 to € 49) and names an ‘iXBRL export for the KVK’ (source: jaarklaar.app), the entrepreneur version of Nmbrs Compilation, with which according to Nmbrs you compile ‘your annual accounts yourself’ and file directly with the KVK (source: nmbrs.com, entrepreneurs), and Jaarrekening.io.
Suitable for
Directors of a BV or holding company who want to prepare the accounts themselves and want more support than a fill-in screen offers.
Note
Ask what the tool does at filing. Some tools submit themselves, others deliver a file that you submit yourself or have validated first. AI texts remain drafts: the board prepares the annual accounts and signs them.
Online bookkeeping services: have it done at a fixed rate
If you do not want to do it yourself, there are online bookkeeping services that prepare and file the annual accounts as part of a package. Firm24 names in its bookkeeping deal for a holding company, among other things, ‘Preparing and filing annual accounts’, for € 125 a month excl. VAT in the first 12 months (source: firm24.com).
Paperdork combines an online bookkeeping program with a fixed ‘cijferbaas’ (numbers boss). For a BV it names a from-price of € 2.350 per calendar year, with the filing of the annual accounts included; we found no VAT statement with that amount (source: paperdork.nl). With such services you pay for human work and for the whole bookkeeping, not just for the annual accounts.
Suitable for
Entrepreneurs who want to outsource administration, tax returns and annual accounts entirely.
Note
Compare what is in the price (tax returns, payroll administration of the director-major shareholder, minutes) and what the rate is after an introductory period.

Excel and Word templates
A template gives structure, but you do everything yourself: classifying, adding up, explaining and checking. A paid example is ‘Jaarrekening in Excel Pro’ from Boekhouden in Excel, with licences from € 197 to € 347 (source: boekhoudeninexcel.nl).
Filing is digital: via the KVK portal or as an (i)XBRL file (sources: kvk.nl, filing with SBR; SBR guide 2025). So you still have to copy the figures from an Excel or Word file into the portal or have them converted.
Suitable for
Those who want to make a first draft or want to learn how annual accounts are built up.
Note
Check whether the template uses the current size criteria. These were raised for financial years from 1 January 2024.
Criteria for comparing annual accounts software
Use these criteria to put vendors within a category side by side. They follow from the law and from the way the KVK receives filings.
| Criterion | Why it matters | Question for the vendor |
|---|---|---|
| Size class | Micro and small may file abridged documents; medium-sized and large have more components and an audit requirement (art. 2:393 DCC). | Which size classes can you prepare and file? |
| Legal form | Title 9 Book 2 DCC applies to BV, NV, cooperative and mutual insurance association (onderlinge waarborgmaatschappij); for a foundation or association only if its business(es) reach at least € 7,5 million net turnover in two consecutive financial years (art. 2:360(3) DCC). A sole proprietorship does not have to file (source: kvk.nl, whether or not to file). | Does the software support my legal form, and also a holding company? |
| Filing route | Since financial year 2025 all business classes file digitally via SBR. Submitting from software requires a PKIoverheid certificate (source: kvk.nl, filing with SBR). | Does the software submit itself, or do I get a file for the portal or an intermediary? |
| Notes and management report | The figures are only part of the annual accounts; the notes belong with them and must fit your size class. The management report is a separate document alongside the annual accounts, mandatory for medium-sized and large (art. 2:391 DCC); small and micro entities are exempt (art. 2:396(7) DCC). | Does the software produce the notes, or only the balance sheet and profit and loss account? |
| Import | Retyping is a major source of errors. | Does the software import a trial balance or XAF audit file? Does it use RGS codes? |
| Comparative figures | For each item the prior-year amount belongs with it as far as possible (art. 2:363(5) DCC). | How do last year's figures get in? |
| Price model | Per month, per file or per set of annual accounts: with one BV that makes a big difference. | What does one set of annual accounts cost per year, and is that including or excluding VAT? |
| Responsibility | The content remains the responsibility of the entity (source: SBR guide 2025). Software or AI does not take that over. | Which checks does the software carry out, and what must I assess myself? |
How to choose software in general is in annual accounts software: what it is and how to choose; what the pricing models cost in practice is in what does annual accounts software cost? If you are not sure of your size class, use the size class calculator.
Which route fits your situation?
Freelancer or sole proprietorship
A sole proprietorship does not have to file annual accounts (source: kvk.nl, whether or not to file). You do need a balance sheet and profit and loss account for the income tax return. A bookkeeping package with tax return support is then usually enough.
Micro BV or holding company
You file only a limited balance sheet (source: kvk.nl, micro and small). The KVK portal is free and suffices for a simple balance sheet. Software helps if you want to work from a trial balance, take over comparative figures or manage several BVs.
Small BV with staff
The annual accounts for the shareholders are more extensive than what you file: an abridged balance sheet with notes (source: kvk.nl, micro and small). A tool that makes both the full annual accounts and the publication version saves double work. There is no audit requirement, but a bank may ask for a compilation report.
Medium-sized or large entity
An audit requirement applies (art. 2:393 DCC). Choose software that fits your accountant's way of working and plan the audit well before the filing deadline.
Accounting or bookkeeping firm
Choose firm software with compilation file, work programmes and SBR submission for all classes you serve. Work out the price per file, per user or per month for your client base. See also annual accounts software for firms.
Foundation or association
Title 9 applies to a foundation or association only with a business that has at least € 7,5 million turnover in two consecutive financial years (source: kvk.nl, whether or not to file). Below that, articles of association or grant conditions usually determine what you must prepare.
When is an accountant the better choice?
Choose an accountant if the law requires it. Medium-sized and large entities have an audit requirement (art. 2:393 DCC); software can prepare the compilation, but cannot replace the audit.
Even without an obligation an accountant can be the better choice. For example if your bank asks for a compilation report, in a restructuring or takeover, in case of doubt about valuation or going concern, or if you simply do not want to spend time on it.
Software and accountant are not mutually exclusive. Many firms themselves work with the year-end software from this guide, and a balanced trial balance makes your accountant's work shorter.
A more extensive weighing-up is in annual accounts software vs. accountant and audit requirement: when is an accountant mandatory?
Where Jaarrekening.io fits, and where not
Fits well with
- Directors and controllers of a BV, NV or cooperative who want to prepare the annual accounts themselves from a trial balance (Excel or CSV) or an XAF audit file from their bookkeeping package.
- Those who want the notes and, where mandatory, the management report prepared as an editable AI draft and assess it themselves. The amounts come from fixed calculation rules, not from the language model.
- Those who want board, controller and accountant to work in one workspace, with roles, invitations by e-mail, approval per section and an audit trail.
- Those who prefer to pay per set of annual accounts rather than per month.
Fits less or not
- Sole proprietorship, vof, cv and maatschap: these as a rule do not fall under Title 9 Book 2 DCC and a sole proprietorship does not have to file (source: kvk.nl, whether or not to file). The annual accounts route is not meant for them.
- Foundations and associations that do not fall under art. 2:360(3) DCC.
- Those who want the software to file itself. Jaarrekening.io sends nothing to the KVK. For micro and small you can enter the data yourself in the KVK portal Zelf Deponeren. The XBRL file of a large entity cannot go through that portal: an intermediary, usually the accountant, submits it with SBR software.
- Those who need an iXBRL file, or an XBRL file of consolidated annual accounts. Jaarrekening.io produces an XBRL validation candidate for every size class, for financial years starting in 2023 through 2026. Have it validated externally before filing.
- Those who need an auditor's report or compilation report. An auditor's report is issued only by an accountant; a compilation report is issued by an accountant, or by a bookkeeping firm that issues it under the rules of its professional body.
- Firms looking for a practice package with compilation file, work programmes and their own SBR submission for all their clients.
At Jaarrekening.io the first annual accounts in your account are free, for every size class. After that it charges per set of annual accounts: once per financial year € 250 (micro), € 500 (small), € 2.000 (medium-sized) or € 5.000 (large), all amounts excl. VAT and without a subscription. The other modules on the pricing page are optional.

How to test a vendor yourself
In doubt between two vendors? Put these questions to them and ask for a written answer.
- Which size classes and legal forms do you support for preparing, and which for filing?
- Does the software submit to the KVK itself? If so: via which channel and with whose PKIoverheid certificate (source: kvk.nl, filing with SBR)?
- Which version of the Dutch Taxonomy (Nederlandse Taxonomie) do you use for my financial year?
- How do the figures get in: trial balance, XAF audit file, RGS codes or a link with my package?
- Does the software produce the notes and, if mandatory, the management report? Or only the balance sheet and profit and loss account?
- How do last year's comparative figures get in (art. 2:363(5) DCC)?
- What does one set of annual accounts cost per year, including or excluding VAT, and what is the notice period?
- Where is my data, and which data processing agreement do I get?

Frequently asked questions
What is the best annual accounts software for a BV?
That depends on the size class and on who does the work. For a micro or small BV with a simple balance sheet, the free KVK portal Zelf Deponeren is a realistic option. If you want to work from a trial balance, with notes and comparative figures, a self-service tool or reporting software fits. Where there is an audit requirement, you work together with your accountant.
Can I prepare and file my annual accounts for free?
Filing with the KVK is free. In the Zelf Deponeren portal, micro and small entities can also prepare the annual accounts themselves. If you log in with eHerkenning, you usually do pay the eHerkenning provider.
Which program do accountants use for annual accounts?
Firms usually work with year-end software with a compilation file, work programmes and SBR submission. Examples on the Dutch market are Caseware, Nmbrs Compilation (Nmbrs Reporting, formerly Visionplanner), Exact Online Jaarrekening, Nextens Jaarrekening, SnelStart Accountant Pro and Silverfin. This list is not a ranking.
Does my bookkeeping package also prepare the annual accounts?
Sometimes. Some packages put the balance sheet and profit and loss account in the KVK layout, others deliver only separate reports. Moneybird, for example, writes itself that it does not compile full annual accounts. Look above all at whether the notes are produced and how you file.
Is annual accounts software with AI reliable?
AI can propose the mapping of accounts to line items and write texts as a draft. The amounts should come from fixed calculation rules, not from a language model. The board remains responsible and signs the annual accounts, so always read AI texts.
When do I need an accountant after all?
For a medium-sized or large entity an audit requirement applies (art. 2:393 DCC). Banks also sometimes ask for a compilation report, and only an accountant issues that.
